BERLIN (AFP) – A German man who tried to blackmail Cindy Crawford over a photograph showing the supermodel's young daughter gagged and bound was sentenced Tuesday to two years behind bars.
Edis Kayalar, 26, was found guilty of one count of extortion and two counts of attempted extortion after he demanded more than 100,000 dollars (74,000 euros) from Crawford, a court near the southern German city of Stuttgart ruled.
The shaven-headed Kayalar, wearing a grey shirt and skinny black tie, covered his face with a pink folder to avoid photographers in the court.
The Crawfords' daughter, Kaia, seven years old at the time, told her parents, who were unaware of the image, that her nanny had taken the photograph at the family home in the United States as part of a "Cops and Robbers" game.
Kayalar, a friend of the nanny, took possession of the photo and warned Crawford and her businessman husband Rande Gerber that he would sell the picture to tabloid newspapers unless they paid him.
The couple paid him 1,000 dollars last July and received the photo in return. But two days later, Kayalar allegedly claimed to have a digital copy of the picture and demanded more money.
This time, Crawford, 44, and Gerber, 48, reported the extortion attempt, triggering an FBI investigation in the United States.
Prosecutors say Kayalar, a professional model according to entertainment site TMZ.com, demanded another 5,000 dollars in September but he was deported soon afterwards due to immigration law violations.
He then phoned the couple in November and demanded they transfer 100,000 dollars to his bank account in Germany.
But Kayalar then became worried the money would raise eyebrows with social welfare authorities as he was receiving unemployment benefits and went to Turkey, allegedly to open a separate bank account for the money from Crawford.
When he saw that the case had hit the local newspapers, Kayalar feared arrest in Turkey so he quickly returned to Germany and turned himself in to police.
Crawford, formerly married to Hollywood heart-throb Richard Gere, has been married to Gerber since 1998. They have two children together.

Cindy Crawford's the only one who takes photos for money in this bunch.

The supermodel and husband Rande Gerber were targeted by a would-be extortionist who had in his possession a "sexy" photo of the couple's then 7-year-old daughter and wanted to make a deal so the pic "wouldn't end up in the tabloids," according to a federal criminal complaint filed Tuesday.

The couple told investigators that Edis "Eddie" Kayalar, who has since been deported back to his home country of Germany, called them in July, claiming to be a "good person" who just wanted to help them out.

According to the complaint, Kayalar told them that the photo, in which their young daughter was gagged, dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, and tied to a chair, "just wasn't right" and he was "bothered" by it.

Presumably pretty horrified, Gerber and Crawford say that they had no idea such a photograph, which the family's former nanny has admitted to taking "as a prank," even existed.

"A criminal complaint was filed today in federal court in Los Angeles by the U.S. Attorney's office and the FBI, stating that Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford have been the victims of an ongoing extortion scheme," a rep for the couple said in a statement Thursday.

"There was no previous awareness by Mr. Gerber and Ms. Crawford of the existence of the photograph when they were contacted by Mr. Kayalar. The photo was taken by the former nanny as part of a purported game, without the knowledge of the parents. The couple reported the extortion threat to the police and the FBI began a criminal investigation in the matter.

"Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford intend to pursue any and all available legal action against anyone who aids the perpetrator in the distribution or sale of the photograph of their daughter."

Per the complaint, Kayalar swiped the alarming-sounding pic from the nanny's apartment after meeting her at a bar. He also apparently got Crawford's cell phone number from there as well, while the nanny was asleep.

Kayalar also said he removed a handwritten note from the apartment that read, "The babysitter went crazy & tied everyone up & they need your help! Please."

Kayalar arranged a meeting with Gerber at a bar in Venice, Calif., where he showed the father of two a copy of the picture on his cell phone, saying he had left the original with friends for safekeeping.

Kayalar "hinted that he was 'broke' and would like a monetary reward for returning the photograph," Special Agent Kelly L. Decker wrote.

Kayalar then agreed to meet with Gerber and a deputy sheriff to confront the nanny. When they were all face-to-face, the nanny, who had been fired a week before Kayalar ever got in touch with the family, admitted to taking the picture "as a prank."

Soon after, Gerber told authorities that he had a hard copy of the photo in his possession and had given Kayalar $1,000 in return, but two days later, Kayalar called him back and demanded more money, telling him the tabloids would have paid $500,000.

The LAPD's Major Crimes Bureau was alerted, after which they contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Deportation proceedings against Kayalar kicked off in September.

In a phone call to Gerber from Germany on Nov. 1, Kayalar demanded $100,000 and threatened to give the photo to the media otherwise, the complaint states.

Blaming Gerber and Crawford for his deportation and financial struggles, Kayalar told Gerber that he knew he had committed a "f--ked-up crime" but that he felt he deserved the money.

Actually, he preferred 100,000 euros, because the American dollar was not worth "s--t" in Europe.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller tells E! News that there is a warrant out for Kayalar's arrest. The nanny, who has not been identified, is not facing any charges at this point.

As for Crawford and Gerber, "they are the victims in this case," Eimiller said.

The Pepsi commercial, which was created by Omnicom agency BBDO and last aired during the Super Bowl 17 years ago, was rated as the sexiest TV commercial among 35 viewed by eight judges from the advertising industry.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Department store chain J.C. Penney Co Inc said it would launch a line of home goods by supermodel Cindy Crawford later this year, at a time when shoppers are cutting discretionary purchases.
The merchandise, ranging from bedding and bath items to wall decor and rugs, will be available exclusively at Penney stores in September, the company said on Friday. Penney, which bills the line as affordable, said it would offer promotional prices for some items, like $23.99 for decorative pillows and $169.99 for a queen comforter set.
Furniture store chain Raymour & Flanigan already sells a line of furniture designed by Crawford.
Penney, like other department store chains, has been facing sagging sales in past months as consumers cut spending on items such as furniture and apparel in the recession.
Still, Penney has said it will try to capture market share by touting unique brands and wooing customers who used to shop at rivals that are now bankrupt, such as Linen 'n Things.
"This will ensure that when the market turns, we will maintain our advantage as a leader in the home business," Penney President Ken Hicks said in a statement.
Penney shares were up 12 cents, or 0.6 percent, at $22.09 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Carl Hiassen in today's edition of The Miami Herald:

The collapse of Wall Street and the freeze of credit markets can be traced to one unlikely culprit: Cindy Crawford.

I'm sure she didn't mean to cripple the economy. Most supermodels avoid meddling in global monetary markets, and it's unlikely that Cindy realized how much influence she commanded.

Tragically, however, the crash of 2008 can be connected to that fateful day, a few short years ago, when Cindy got into the business of designing furniture for a popular retail firm.

It wasn't long before the Crawford brand caught fire. Every time you turned on the television, there she was, languidly sprawling across one of her Microfiber Plush sofas, or carefully arranging the pastel placements on one of her cherry-veneer dining tables.

She looked great. She had style. She was also much taller than most interior designers.

And, amazingly, you could buy a whole roomful of Cindy's furniture with no down payment. Unbelievable!

More amazingly, you didn't have to start paying off the stuff for a whole year or even longer. As a result, thousands of Americans who could barely afford their car payments eagerly started purchasing Cindy's terrific furniture -- although it wasn't technically purchasing, because not much actual money was involved.

As bankers watched the Cindy phenomenon grow, they realized that the customers who were snapping up all this accessible furniture might want larger homes to put it in.

The bankers also understood that special mortgages would be necessary when dealing with folks who already needed at least a year to pay for a headboard and a nightstand.

Thus was born the concept of subprime loans, a financing ploy very similar to the one used so successfully by Cindy Crawford's furniture company.

Subprimes allowed Americans to get homes with a minimal down payment. Interest rates were extremely low, and extremely temporary. The mortgages were structured so that those rates -- and the customers' monthly nut -- would shoot up radically after a few years, yet nobody seemed worried about that.

Bankers were just tickled to be selling so many loans, real-estate agents were thrilled to be selling so many houses, and home-buyers were elated to have more rooms in which to arrange all their new (and still unpaid-for) Cindy Crawford furnishings.

The economy was booming, or so we were told. Unfortunately, at no point in this brainless orgy of lending was it required for the folks who were borrowing all that easy money to show they had the means to repay it.

Inevitably, Wall Street was smitten by the Cindy factor. Venerable institutions like Lehman Brothers bought up billions of dollars' worth of bundled subprime mortgages, on the theory that the price of real-estate would keep rising insanely until the end of time.

If some poor sucker had to default, so what? Repossess his house and sell it for a profit to some other sucker, who could then fill it with more unpaid-for furniture by Cindy Crawford.

But the Wall Street wizards who control the credit flow made a disastrous blunder. The Cindy Model of friendly finance doesn't work very well when the stakes are high.

Selling a roomful of furniture to a family that can't afford to put any cash on the table is different than selling them a house. Thousands of subprime and adjustable-rate mortgages went plummeting into default, and the rest is history.

As Congress and the White House scramble to stanch the bleeding, investor confidence remains shaky. It might be helpful if Cindy stepped forward in some dramatic way, as fellow icon Warren Buffett has done.

Here's what she should say to reassure worried Americans:

"Please don't buy any more of my elegant yet comfortable furniture unless you actually have the money to pay for it. Before coming to the store, take a close look at your bank statements to make sure you're not making an incredibly foolish mistake.

"Hey, if you can't write a personal check for that five-piece king bedroom set, then you probably shouldn't buy it. Be stylish, America, but be smart. Tomorrow will be a brighter day."

Cindy Crawford's husband, Rande Gerber, is in legal hot water over a new business venture - and it all comes down to the word "sky".

According to celebrity website TMZ.COM, restaurateur Gerber signed a contract with Morgans Hotel Group - the company that owns Hollywood hotspot Skybar, which Gerber once managed - forbidding him from incorporating the word "sky" into any of his future ventures.

Gerber's decision to design a new in-flight cocktail menu, Midnight Sky, for Delta Airlines has, however, ruffled feathers at Morgans. Lawyers for the group have filed a $500,000 lawsuit for breach of contract and unjust enrichment in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Gerber's defence? He had no control over the naming of the new range.

Cindy and child cancer survivors

MADISON (WKOW) -- Hundreds of little kids who beat cancer spent the day at Monona Terrace in Madison painting, playing basketball, and posing for pictures with Supermodel Cindy Crawford.

It's the 4th Kids with Courage event, a five-year reunion for child cancer survivors. Crawford got involved in 1993 as a tribute to her brother, Jeffrey, who died at UW Hospital before his 4th birthday when Crawford was still a kid.

"A lot of little kids, honestly, don't know who Cindy Crawford is, or don't care. That's why I show up with a gift, like a stuffed animal," said Crawford, 42.

We met dozens of kids not shy at all when we asked about their cancer. "This is my scar from my brain tumor," said Anthony, 12, from Mosinee.

"I don't remember what my cancer was," said another boy, a 2nd grader, "but my mom would remember." Crawford says it's important to have these events for child cancer survivors to talk in the open about what they're going through.

"They don't want people tiptoeing around them," she said. Cancer survival rates for pediatric patients have improved significantly in the past several decades, from 30 percent to 80 percent or better today.

In fact, Crawford acknowledged her brother probably would have survived had he come down with cancer today.

Now the American model has taken steps to make her Malibu home more environmentally friendly and signed up for a campaign with PUR Water Filtration Systems promoting filtered tap water over plastic bottled water.
Crawford said this would help eliminate some of the 50 billion plastic water bottles used by Americans every year and save people money as well as being good for their health.
A limited-edition water reusable bottle designed by Crawford is available at www.thirstyforchange.com with all proceeds going to Procter & Gamble's "Children's Safe Drinking Water Program" to help reduce water-related disease in many developing countries.
Crawford, 42, spoke to Reuters about going green:
Q: What prompted you to think green?
A: "My kids (Presley, 8, and Kaia, 6) are the ones that inspired me to want to do more. I am concerned about the planet that I'm leaving to my kids and the school they go it very environmentally conscience. They cut down on plastic, they recycle, they have solar power."
Q: Do you think the younger generations are more environmentally aware?
A: "Yes, because that is the culture they are growing up in. They are growing up with a lack of fear of computers and they have a different relationship with them than we do. They are also being brought up not to take the environment for granted and they are beginning to bring that message home."
Q: Were you feeling guilty?
A: "I wish I was more green than I am and I really want to be. This campaign shows people you don't have to go far. You can make small changes in your life and it can make a difference. This is an easy change. You can do it by yourself at home. In Los Angeles everyone has a water bottle with them so get a reusable one and make that change."
Q: What else have you done at home to be greener?
A: "I wasn't aware that if you leave your charger plugged in it is drawing electricity. Once I knew this I started to unplug my phone charger when I wasn't using it. I went to my husband and said the TV in the guest room should be unplugged when it is not being used. There are a lot of other plugs in our house that can be pulled, like the toaster. I have left the microwave in the kitchen plugged in though as I use the clock on that."
Q: Any other ways?
A: "I have stared to reuse cloth grocery bags. I bought loads of them and have left them everywhere so no one has an excuse not to use them. Just these small steps make a difference and you will feel better about it yourself. There is so much more I can do and I will do that in a way that does not overwhelm me."
Q: Do you think the showbiz world is getting greener?
A: "A lot of my friends are very environmentally aware. I don't know a single person who didn't see Al Gore's movie An Inconvenient Truth. Even Vanity Fair does a green issue which shows that it is emerging as a mainstream issue and it will get more so. As a parent you care not only about the world you are creating for your children but the world you are leaving them."

Models don't retire; they diversify.

So it should come as a surprise to no one that supermodel Cindy Crawford designs a furniture collection for Rooms to Go. But when company CEO Jeffrey Seaman first approached her with the idea, Crawford's initial response was "Why me?"

Why not?

Long before model Heidi Klum filmed her first episode of "Project Runway" or Tyra Banks donned a fat suit for her daytime talk show, Crawford made the move to television as host of MTV's "House of Style" in 1989. Now she puts that fashion gene to more practical use. Since its launch in 2005, Cindy Crawford Home has released nearly 50 collections that include everything from living room sets to kids' furniture and accessories.

Crawford, interviewed from her home in Malibu, Calif., will stop in Atlanta at 11 a.m. May 17 to sign autographs at the Rooms to Go at Mall of Georgia. Atlanta serves as the executive headquarters for the Florida-based Rooms to Go.

Q: How did you connect with Rooms to Go?

A: Jeffrey Seaman was thinking about doing something different when he ran across my picture in a magazine and said, "Yeah, let's get Cindy Crawford."

I wasn't familiar with Rooms to Go. It's huge in the Southeast, but if you're not from the Southeast you haven't heard of it. ... We met at a Rooms to Go in Dallas — halfway for both of us. Once I got into the store I was sold.

He helped me get over looking at myself as only a model. He said, "Cindy, you have style and that translates to other areas of your life."

Q: Are you very involved in the design process?

A: It started out with a design team from Rooms to Go coming to my home in Malibu. I walked them through the house.

I wanted them to get a sense of who I was and how I liked to live. I pointed out what I liked. My husband [nightclub owner Rande Gerber] and I love to read design magazines. We love traveling. I'd tell the designers, "Use this finish" or "Try this color." Then the real designers would go do their thing and present to me.

At that point I think I'm very effective as an editor. ...

I see the product at every stage, from the drawings to the fabric swatches. I look at the wood finish, the samples, and then the finished products. ... With 20-plus years of experience, I'm valuable with the marketing. I'm good at working on scripts for commercials and picking photographers. ... It's my furniture line. It has to have a lot of me in it.

Q: Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

A: The fact that I'm a mother influences a lot. I constantly ask questions like "Is it washable? Is someone going to get hurt on it? Is it good quality?" You have to ask, "Does it fit with my decorating taste?"

A race-car bed is nice and the kids want it, but I don't want it in my house. Hopefully my child won't be going to therapy because I never got him a race-car bed. I wanted the frame of their bedroom to be something that they wouldn't get sick of in one or two years.

Q: What's hot in fabrics and furniture styles?

A: We're looking to use color, but on more traditional frames. Even some of our very successful leather pieces we are doing in burnt tangerine and raspberry. ... Also, I love fabrics that look great and feel great but are durable.

Q: Your husband is opening Whiskey Park at the W Atlanta Midtown. Have you offered any design tips?

A: We both really respect each other's opinion. I'll show him designs and he'll do the same for me. But it's nothis first time at the rodeo. ... [Whiskey Park] is super sexy. It's Versace meets hip-hop, and it's really cool. I'll be there for [the official opening night on] my 10th wedding anniversary on May 29.

Q: You and other models have moved on to other pursuits. How do you feel about the idea of model as mogul?

A: I just think we're the lucky ones who were able to take advantage of opportunities before us. But you also have to be a little bit fearless. ...

And I'm not the 25-year-old model that I was, I'm a 42-year-old mother of two. It makes sense that I'm talking about homes.

I've let the things I'm passionate about in life translate to my work, and customers are smart enough to know when you're authentic.

"She was just wearing a very brief bikini", Cheryl Arundel recalled, in "an ad for Marshall Field`s. It was so sensational, kids plastered it on every bulletin board and wall at De Kalb High. Cindy was an A student and was totally embarrassed but after that, she was the girl everyone wanted to date."

*1966* Born: February 20, De Kalb, Illinois
*1975* January 3rd, Cindy`s brother Jeffrey died of leukemia two weeks before his 4th birthday
*1982* Her parents, Jennifer and Daniel, are divorced
*1983* Cindy and a friend were among 50 girls who spent a free weekend in Chicago in exchange for letting Clairol Inc. cut their hair at the Midwest Hair Show. One of the Clairol people suggested she try modeling and gave her the name of an agency.

That agency was less than enthusiastic about her long-legged, fresh-scrubbed looks and they insisted on removing the mole. "The mole thing upset me. I don't believe in having things like that done, but I was interested in seeing if I could do something in modeling." She made a deal with her parents. They gave her $500 and told her that was it. She used the money to have her pictures taken. "The pictures weren't too good. But the makeup artist called Elite about me."

"She came in one day and told me she had to make a decision whether she should leave her job in the cornfield," remembers Elite's Marie Anderson.
"I told her to please take a chance and drop the cornfield job." Cindy began edging towards the $1,000-a-day bracket that summer between her junior and senior years of high school. She went to Japan on a modeling assignment, she was one of 12 finalists in an international Elite-sponsored contest, she continued getting straight A's in high school and she met Victor Skrebneski.

*1984 - 1985* Cindy graduated Valedictorian of DeKalb High and had bet her father that she would get straight A's all the way through high school; "When I got my last report card, I said, 'Dad, you owe me.' He said, 'You're asking me for that money when you're making all that?' And I said, 'I certainly am--it's the principle of it." She won enough scholarships and grants to attend Northwestern University but had to leave after a semester because juggling a major in chemical engineering with modeling was too much.

The relationship between Victor and Cindy is intense. "It has to be, when you work with someone every day," he says. "I know her concerns ... when I'm nervous, she gets nervous. I'm not close to most models anymore, but Cindy is here almost every day. She brings hot muffins when she comes in the morning. We work, we take maybe 14 minutes for lunch. By 5, we're exhausted." She has, he says, "one of the most beautiful natural bodies," but it's her intelligence that has been crucial in the making of the million-dollar face.

"It's not complicated (why she has become a star), it's really simple. It's that intelligent force in her--she learns so quickly." "He teaches you, he makes you into the kind of model he wants to work with," she says. "He knows exactly what he wants. It's hard to describe exactly how I feel about him, except I know I respect him as much as I've ever respected anyone."
Skrebneski adds: "It's inevitable that there will be a split at some time. She will leave. She might get interested in films. There are any number of things she can do. She's so intelligent. But I still have some time with her."

*1986* Cindy commuted between jobs in Chicago and New York but she didn't make a commitment to New York until she had a fall-out with Skrebneski on her 20th birthday. The next day Cindy learned that she`d won a big money job in Bali. She had to cancel a conflicting shoot with Skrebneski. "That was it", she says. "I understand his feelings. He made me. But you can`t make something and keep it for yourself. " Cindy finally took the plunge and moved to New York to try her luck.
